Lighting Concept:
Little Village Marketplace, a children’s retail design solutions, is based on the idea of shopping in an open marketplace. Illumination was categorized into three different levels: The Sky, Glow, and Sparkle. These lighting levels were used as a guide for designing and specifying the lighting scheme. The result is a lighting design that attracts the customers, draws attention, and creates just the right marketplace atmosphere.
The SKY at an open marketplace is the first and largest level of illumination. As it changes in brightness and color throughout the day, it significantly influences the mood, atmosphere, and general aura that people will experience while shopping. To emulate the sky, dimmable compact fluorescent downlights provide overall ambient lighting for the space. Dimmers on these fixtures will, like the sky, allow the space to have different feelings and impressions based on the desired ambience of the retailer.
The soft GLOW that occurs under awnings and canopies adds to the intrigue of shopping. It not only helps to delineate space, but also lets shoppers know that there is something special to be discovered underneath. This second level of lighting provides indirect illumination, and brings character and enchantment to the retail environment. To recreate this feel, track lighting is suspended beneath store canopies uplighting the canopies. A glow is created as the light hits the slightly transparent canvas.
The third layer of lighting that occurs is SPARKLE. Extremely important in a retail setting, it not only serves as task lighting, but also captures attention and focuses interest on the unique products. This layer of lighting is most mesmerizing. Sparkle is created in the store by using movable track suspended beneath the canopies bringing the space to life, and adding function and charm.
